Grufesa develops a new system that allows the use of every single drop of water

The cooperative had set in motion a series of innovative projects that allows a sustainable and responsible use of water resources.

Grufesa is aware of the importance of taking care of the environment in which more of 24.000 tons of strawberries are produced each season for the quality and value of its fruit. One of the key areas in which it is working on is the use of every single drop of irrigation water, as well as the exact use of nutrients the plant needs.

As Carlos Cumbreras, the company manager, explains: “every drop of water counts”. Therefore the cooperative is involved in innovative projects that grant a sustainable use of water resources. With IG4 we set in motion a resources optimization system that allows meeting in real time the specific needs of each farm through Internet, using a set of sensors and a wireless system.

“This means we don’t waste water or nutrients. We use, and use well, only what the plant needs. This has benefits in the fruit, because it is more natural, and in the land. This project is gaining importance in an environment in which Grufesa’s strawberries grows, in the vicinity of Doñana and with a scarce resource in the region as water is” says Cumbreras’.

The company is pioneer in Huelva’s strawberry sector with the implementation in 2010 of Food Chain Partnership, a way of farming that ensures the perfect health conditions of our crops, that will produce a high quality, safe and healthy strawberry, thanks to all the demanding protocols of plagues and crop disease that are, on top of that, respectful with the environment.

The commitment of the cooperative with sustainability led it to obtain the Sigfito 2014 award from the non-profit organization Sigfito Agroenvases, for its adequate storage and subsequent recycling of agricultural containers. The company contributed the most in the province of Huelva with the collection of containers used by farmers to recycle it afterwards, which represents an important contribution to the preservation of the environment where its strawberries grow.
